Anonymous illustration of a reading room in the ancient Library of Alexandria, Egypt. Founded by Pharaoh Ptolemy I (305-284 BCE), the Library eventually grew to house a collection of over 500,000 volumes. It also functioned as a laboratory, museum, and scriptorium during its nine centuries of operation.
