Avicenna (980-1037 CE), depicted here in an anonymous illustration from a medieval manuscript, was a Persian mathematician, philosopher, and physician. He was an amazing prodigy in his youth: he had authored a voluminous textbook on medical science (The Canon of Medicine) by the age of 21. Avicenna also wrote and taught extensively on ancient Greek philosophy. (Image Credit: Public Domain)
