Burgers for 17 cents? It proves a point.
College of ACES students Dorothy Spencer, Andrew Bowman, and Brittney Swan get ready to serve the crowds of hungry students and faculty who arrived at the Ag Day Meal on April 9 in hopes of a 17 cent lunch. Why 17 cents? There IS a logical reason . . .
Members of Alpha Zeta Honorary Agriculture
Fraternity, who sponsored this year's Ag Day Meal, can tell you that for every
dollar of food purchased in the United
States, the farmers who raise that food
receive 17 cents in profit. Alpha Zeta offered the first hundred attendees their meal at that price. And even for the 700+ additional students, faculty and staff who weren't lucky enough to be at the head of the line, the meal--a choice of hamburger, porkburger, or veggieburger, plus chips, cookie and beverage--cost only $1.70.
The Ag Day Lunch is intended to graphically dispel myths about the U.S. food system.
